On the lower end of broadband... [Sep. 8th, 2008|07:55 am]
Just got wireless broadband to the home and it's much faster than dialup, but not as fast as it could be. It's better now since the hassle of dialup connectivity is no longer there. Plus, my family is reaping the benefits of faster access. I probably should've gotten this long time ago, but didn't have the resources to throw at it.

Kyle's First Day at School [May. 5th, 2008|11:58 pm]
He's just three, but Kyle was immensely excited to go to a summer fun school at a nearby pre-school. His face was plastered with delight and wonder throughout.

Bought a new digital camera - Olympus FE-15 [May. 5th, 2008|02:25 am]
We just bought a new digital camera, the Olympus FE-15, last night. Our old Olympus D550 went kaput after serving us for over five years. Tradeoffs: no viewfinder, you need to use the LCD screen to point and shoot; viewing pics requires you to turn the entire unit on (lens will pop out on power-on and use up battery power); other stuff that escape me at the moment. All-in-all though, it looks like a good deal.

We'll take the car to the zoo... [Feb. 2nd, 2008|05:56 pm]
Now, my family can say that again!

We traded in our '97 Mazda 323 and bought a bluish-silver Honda City 1.3A M/T at Honda Cars Global City.

We miss the Mazda because it was roomy and comfy inside. But of late, the engine performance and our troubles with repairs was too much of a hassle for us. So we decided to get a new car.

toys i wanna buy [Jan. 13th, 2008|12:29 am]
we bought cole a PSP fat for christmas 2007... then i started looking at emulators for the thing. i ran across this neat open source handheld from korea that can be used as a media player/game system. it's called GP2X. i dunno if it's available locally, but from the EU prices, the cost is a bit steep. but it's on my wishlist of toys i would like to have.

i also would like to get a Neo1973 phone.

just to play around with.

Got c59 printer working [Sep. 17th, 2007|06:09 am]
[mood |accomplished]

We got an Epson Stylus C59 this weekend. I hooked it up to our old box quite easily, it uses USB. I will need to get a USB hub soon as this box only has two USB ports and the printer will occupy one permanently.

Getting it to print wasn't that easy, or maybe I was just looking at the wrong settings. I finally got it to work on CUPS with Gutenprint drivers for the Epson Stylus C65.

working wirelessly at home [Aug. 8th, 2007|08:47 am]
I just deployed the new wireless access point I bought at .sg for cheap. After a bit of wire shuffling to get it connected to my desktop box, although my setup at home isn't standard, I quickly figured out what to do and got it up and running after less than an hour. I am now making this post from gravitas over the aether.

first day as a corporate cog [Jul. 2nd, 2007|06:59 am]
[mood |awake]

not really as corpy as it sounds, i've just joined a small but growing company. this will be my initiation into the non-university atmosphere since i've always been in the university since i joined the workforce.

today, i have an early morning breakfast meeting in a few hours and i have mixed feelings about this. i can no longer be a morning sloth, and this means that my regular grind will change a bit. i will be out of the house more often as well, so i suppose this will change how much i will value every bit of time at home.

In Changi... [Dec. 28th, 2006|03:43 am]
This is my third(?) visit to Singapore, though this will only be a layover for me en route to Chennai, India.

I just love this airport!

--

I had to stop in the middle of the post because it was boarding time. I'm now on the plane heading for Chennai as I write this. It is now almost 11pm back home. I already miss my family, even if what happens at home is pretty much the same every day.

Preparing to travel to India [Nov. 24th, 2006|07:48 pm]
I will be going to Chennai (Madras), India next week.

I applied for a tourist visa at the Indian Embassy in Dasma yesterday only to be told that I should apply for a business visa instead. I also had to produce additional supporting documents (certificate of employment, sponsorship letter). The time window was too short to get the application filed yesterday since I had to go all the way to Manila to get my certificate of employment processed, wait for it to be signed, then go back to Makati to file the paperwork. If I had known that I needed it, then I could have done that earlier in the week.

Anyway, I was able to get the required papers in order and filed my visa application this morning. I paid the expedite fee so that the visa gets released on Monday, 27th November.

I got in touch with the UNDP Travel Admin here in Manila (who turns out to be a schoolmate of my wife. Small world!) to get more information about the flight schedules we can get. The visa release on Monday at 2:30pm just quashed the best possible flight we could have had via Singapore. The other route, via KL, MY, had problems because the connecting flight that was given us was disjoint (i.e. we would get to KL too late for the flight to Chennai). So for now, we're stuck with a flight to Bangkok, Thailand, a stopover of 3 hours, a flight to Mumbai and then a flight to Chennai in the wee hours of the morning!!!

Playstation 2 Slim dominates TV time [Dec. 28th, 2005|10:14 pm]
We got Cole a Playstation 2 for Christmas... finally. Predictably, the PS2 gets a huge chunk of time on the TV in the living room. It's best suited there since it easily attaches to the Samsung home theater system and TV that my parents gave.

I also moved the other TV to our bedroom along with the old DVD player. This means we can now watch in the comfort of an airconditioned room. Now, all I need to do is get rid of the noisy fan on that old DVD player.

Since I'm a PS2 idiot, I didn't know what titles to get for Cole, so I ended up getting the following titles which were given for free with the PS2 package I got: Tekken 5, Final Fantasy X2, Inuyasha: Feudal Combat, Naruto 3 (J), Need For Speed: Underground. I don't know what else I should get, but I plan to get Katamari Damacy and maybe something like Monster Rancher.

redoing stuff [Oct. 26th, 2004|04:02 pm]
i'm not keeping this journal up to date, but spew out on it from time to time. i may end up redoing some old projects in the next year or so, but i guess my age is catching up on me. it gets harder to get myself motivated to do some things that i've already done before.

Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" [Aug. 18th, 2004|04:10 pm]
I finished watching Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai last night. Watched it in three installments. Hiniram ko lang yung DVD sa erpats ko. It was just lying around in his horde, never been watched. I had been wanting to watch this as well as Rashomon, but have not seen copies of these. I have the American film, Magnificent Seven, that was inspired by Seven Samurai on DVD. I could see the parallels between the two, but am more impressed with Seven Samurai.

From Richard Feynman's Nobel lecture... "That was the beginning, and the idea seemed so obvious to me and so elegant that I fell deeply in love with it. And, like falling in love with a woman, it is only possible if you do not know much about her, so you cannot see her faults. The faults will become apparent later, but after the love is strong enough to hold you to her. So, I was held to this theory, in spite of all difficulties, by my youthful enthusiasm."

ETPI's link is erratic again. Spent practically the whole morning on and off the phone with their customer support and NOC folk to check our line. They did a BER test for an hour after lunch-break. They got the line back up after, but the NOC guy told me we should schedule another 24 hour BER test to make sure the link is okay. Will probably schedule it on a weekend, but they need someone at the other end of the link so I might end up scheduling the 24 hour downtime during an office day.

The English Patient [Mar. 1st, 2003|02:24 am]
[mood | content]

We finally finished The English Patient. What a sad and beautiful film! One can feel the love that the Count had for Mrs. Clifton and it was a very moving story. I'm not doing it any justice by describing it this way, but I'm not in the mood to be verbose or descriptive right now.
